As the title says a free web hosting service is a free webspace offered by a hosting company.
Not all of them are really free. These services have some limitations when they are compared to paid hosting. Some companies asks their hosting users to include advertisements on their website if they want to use their free web hosting service.
In this world nothing is really free, so for a free web hosting service is always worth to give hosting for free, because it’s a good method to advertise, to make their company known on the hosting market, to introduce their services or just because the words beginning with “free” are one of the most searched keywords in search engines.
These web hosts in most cases only provide a subdomain (yoursite.mainwebsite.com) or a directory (www.mainwebsite.com/yoursite). Paid web hosts will provide a second level domain with the hosting (www.yoursite.com). Lots of free hosts allow using separately purchased domains and rarely they offer to operate as a domain name registrar.
Some of these companies are offering the free web hosting service only for a period of time as a trial period for their clients, then the clients can upgrade to a paid one if they are satisfied with the offer.
Some limitations a free hosting company may have:
- Limitation on hosted file sizes
- Smaller bandwidth per month
- Disabling the hot linking of some files
- Restrictions of some file types (ex: MP3, MPEG, ZIP)
- Placement of the web hosting company’s banner or ads into all the web pages
- No guarantee for constant hosting uptime
Some other extra offers a free hosting company may have:
- A control panel
- Free email accounts for the domain
- File transfer via FTP or SFTP
- Programming languages such as PHP, ASP, Perl etc.
- Databases such as MySQL
- Some features like a guestbook
- Forums
- Unlimited web space
